Holograms & Communication

Communication and Power
Conflict Reduction

holograms are cool

One has to wonder if the people in the ADR field are dreamers.  One of the founding principles in resolving disputes is that everyone can get what they really need.  I truly believe that the universe has all that we need.  But sometimes we get confused about what we think we need and what we really want.

The assumption of abundance will allow us to creatively solve disputes so that everyone will achieve their desired goals.  "Conflict begins within.  As we unhitch the burden of beliefs systems and heighten our perception, we love more fully and freely."(Heitler, cited in Leonard, pg.32)  One thing to remember is that we all have the same evolutionary power, but perceive unequal personal power resources.

To achieve a balance, it is important that everyone exerts their personal power, while not obstructing others in using their own personal power.  You must also be sure to use your power so that violence isn't done to one's self or a third party.

Hocker and Wilmot(1991) give three basic ways to balance power to achieve no-violence.

1. limit the power use of the high power party

2. empower the lower party

3. transcend the win-lose aspect,and create a collaborative  structure.

The perfect balance to the human condition is to balance the use of personal power with no violence against another.(Pat Patfoort, pg.199)  Violence occurs when one person is obstructed from using their energy to obtain their goals.  No violence can also be an avoidance of conflict, which also permits only one person to use their personal power.  Non-violence is a balance between personal power and no violence.
